Mexico – City and Beach
Mexico City X Puerto Escondido
There are 3 components to surviving a Pacific Northwest winter: heat tech long undies from Uniqlo, a vitamin D supplement, and a warm-weather vacation between November and March. Although I’ve grown up here in Oregon and have become more than accustomed to the rain, the first 10 years of my life were in So Cal and that Oregon cold and darkness just gets to my bones.
This year, I planned our group-chat trip to Mexico – City and Beach. I wanted to experience the culture, food, and shopping in Mexico City that is so distinctly modern and distinctly Mexican. A vibrant and chaotic city that has been on my list for some time. I also wanted to spend some time rotting on a beach. As the options are so amazing in Mexico I didn’t care where, as long it had great weather in February, mostly cost effective, great food, some culture, and had a beautiful ocean view waiting for me, I’m sold. My top contenders were Puerto Escondido, Tulum, Sayulita, and Ixtapa. As you can tell, there is no Cancun or Cabo on this list. I think there’s a time and place for a resort vacation, but that’s not the vision I had for this trip. I wanted some semblance of authenticity and a cultural experience for this trip.
This trip started with 12 interested individuals and over the year of planning dwindled down to 5 including myself! Nevertheless, we move. With a smaller group, we decided that Puerto Escondido was the perfect fit for us. A quick 1 hour flight from CDMX, affordable villas right outside of town for a group our size, meals included in the cost of airbnbs, and more affordable excursions in town compared to chartering a boat led us there.
I am crazy, and I’m also a graphic designer. For every vacation I made decks for the trip so I can visualize all of our options and keep everyone’s info in one place. The following is my initial plan for Mexico City X Puerto Escondido. I’ll update with what we loved and what we didn’t and how it all went next time!
